MOTHER OF OUR MOVEMENTS (excerpt)

SYNOPSIS: No where does our idea of involuntary behavior become more refined than in observations of human beings undergoing sudden or spontaneous convulsions: the discontinuity of the epileptic seizure, observed since the dawn of recorded history, is a prerequisite for the very notion of human will. The idea we possess a faculty of determination, intent, or resolve which transcends the stochastic behavior of phenomena making up the bulk of our surroundings is formed, in part, by those rare individuals whose bodies momentarily mimic the play of so-called inanimate materials and forces. Edited from medical training videos studying epileptic seizures in children, this found-footage film reflects on the mystery of epileptic seizures, their relationship to light, and the reductionism of the medical-industrial complex in navigating those dynamics.
